I was glad to find a perfect machine for me with Linux installed, but thought after checking it out, I'd just install my first love, Ubuntu over top of it. However, after trying it out, it's absolutely awesome.br / br / It's essentially the same as Ubuntu, in look/feel (both GNOME), with more nice defaults set up, and pre-installed, like Pidgin (formerly Gaim, my preferred FOSS IM client - I installed it on Ubuntu). It uses a different package management system, which should be fine, but overall, I loved every part of it in my first 15-20 minute tryout. I think it'll be perfect for my needs here. I also got a free 2GB USB thumbdrive with Foresight, in case I need to reinstall.br / br / Interesting aside: the GNOME development team does all their work in Foresight now, as they consider it to stay truest to their ideals. More info on all of these things starting around a href=http://blogs.gnome.org/kenvandine/2008/03/04/shuttle-chooses-foresight-for-their-new-kpc/here/a in Ken Vandine's blog. I believe he is the father of the Foresight distro./p

That means Compiz is working. And it was working really well, and smoothly, with no lag. I don't even have a graphics card in this thing yet! This is on-board video from a very simple, tiny machine, which starts around $199 (complete, sans monitor/keyboard/mouse), through the VGA port, to my wide-screen 19quot; flat panel monitor, and things like the Compiz 3D cube are playing back at high frame rates. I was worried this thing would be terribly underpowered, but it's looking like it'll be plenty for my needs at the piano.br / br / If you've used Ubuntu, you can see Foresight looks, and acts essentially just like it, save a few color/icon choices. Deeper in, there are a lot of simple decisions I liked a lot, like their choices of included software: Pidgin IM client, Banshee music player (very iTunes-like for Linux), and even Dasher, a little usability app I sometimes like to play with. I'm quite excited to start really setting it up later tonight, after the final season of Battlestar Galactica premieres. What a great day./p

Pretty sassy. There's no CD/DVD drive on this box (much like an Asus EEE, or Apple Air), so you install from USB. This came free for ordering with a long backorder, but then they shipped it 2 days later, and it arrived one day after that! I screwed up, by not being where it was delivered, but they managed to get it to me the next day. Crisis averted./p
