(I also liked to think of it as the Emerald City because it is where the wizards live, but that's another story). The whole floor was open. There were very few doors, and almost all of the offices were glass-walled. I suppose it might have been a bit annoying for moments when you wanted a bit of privacy, but In many ways the open architecture of Linspire's Emerald City is exemplary of the Free and Open culture common to many Free Open Source vendors.. Sure, Linspire could download the code for free and turn around and commercialize it, but there's a lot of polish that has to go on top of the raw Debian code before simple end users will accept it. I thought that Sky Christopherson did a wonderful job here of framing the shot to capture the very open physical layout of Linspire's Emerald City headquarters, while also suggesting that freedom ain't free, you've gotta work hard for it every day. Kendall was also assigned to being our Linspire tour guide. Notice I didn't say Linspire's PR handler. Linspire, like many Free Open Source Software vendors is more interested in fostering open, robust debate, rather than spinning facts. Michael's companies have created quality desktop software products and services with the polish you would expect from Apple, at a price much lower than comparable Microsoft products. For example, Michael's Linspire GNU Linux distro makes it super easy to install slick desktop software with a few clicks. Neither Apple or Microsoft has created anything that comes close to Linspire's applications-installer program, called CNR. CNR lets the user install everything from video editors to music players to webcam software with just a few clicks of a mouse button. The sheer number of high-quality, low-cost software available through CNR's commercialization of the Debian Pool dwarfs the selection available to Windows and Apple customers. Long before Bill Gates or Steve Jobs understood the importance of selling Software as a Service (SaaS), Michael Robertson had already been helping his customers tap the vast Debian Pool with his CNR program. If we are right, and a digital tipping point does flip GNU Linux ahead Microsoft Windows, Michael Robertson will be remembered as one of the business visionaries who helped make it happen./p

Linspire staff called this building quot;The Emerald Cityquot;, and Sky's eye does a wonderful job of capturing the beauty that the Linspirisistas called home./p

In many ways, Kendall is representative of the characteristic that makes Linspire such a cool GNU Linux distro: it's commitment to the end user. I know from having spent a lot of time with Kendall on the Linspire forum and in emails that he works long hard hours to help end users feel comfortable and at home with their GNU Linux distro of choice, whether it is Linspire, Freespire, or even other distros made by other companies. Before Linspire came along, GNU Linux had the reputation as being clunky and a complex tool that only geeks could use. Linspire has led much of the effort to take GNU Linux into the mainstream, and to have it accepted by average users who just want to turn their computer on and zing, it works. Computers are always complex tools, though, and Linspire has understood from the very beginning that a strong community is a key factor in mainstreaming GNU Linux. As a result, the Linspire community forum is among the most active, the most friendly, and the most robust community forums in the world, and much of that success is due to the incredibly hard work of Kendall Dawson in setting the tone for the community forum, which he leads./p
