The Path that Ends w/ Tutorial fixing blown out skyspa href=http://www.flickr.com/people/ewiget41056/ewiget/a posted a photo:/p
pa href=http://www.flickr.com/photos/ewiget41056/2926379207/ title=The Path that Ends w/ Tutorial fixing blown out skysimg src=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3249/2926379207_56c650ca01_m.jpg width=157 height=240 alt=The Path that Ends w/ Tutorial fixing blown out skys //a/p
pOne thing I noticed in the series of shots I took on the first real outing with the Canon 50D is that I kept blowing out the sky. br /
br /
If you look at the high iso tests shots, they were not pp'd at all other than resized. br /
br /
I was shooting at iso 100 and I usually meter on the brightest area of a scene on spot metering. But, I played around with some settings and not sure how this was shot without looking at the exif data. br /
br /
bTutorial - Fixing Blown Out Sky's/bbr /
I use gimp for all of my PP. There is a script-fu plugin/script called Darla's Blue Sky with Clouds - she has many nice scripts available at a href=http://www.farcrydesign.com/GIMP/BlueSkyClouds.htmlwww.farcrydesign.com/GIMP/BlueSkyClouds.html/abr /
br /
The way this is used in gimp is that you first load the image to fix the sky.br /
br /
You then click Color - Threshold and you keep moving the left hand slider up until everything is black that is not the sky. Look at the number of the left slider value and bthen click cancel/b This value is used to create a layer mask in darla's script.br /
br /
You need the number of that slider value for use in darla's script to create the layer mask for the sky and clouds. br /
br /
Then click script-fu - darla - blue sky amp; clouds.br /
br /
Enter the threshold number you obtained in the threshold box.br /
br /
Pick a color for the upper sky and one for the lower sky (I usually have a darker shade of blue for the upper and lighter for the lower).br /
br /
The feather amount is how many pixels out from your threshold / layer mask to feather the effects. I sometimes pick a small number and others a large number depending on the content and also the picture size I am working with. Just play with it until you see how it works. I think I used 7 in this image.br /
br /
Select the box to add rendered clouds. I always leave the checkbox unselected for flatten image.br /
br /
Select O.k. and let it do its thing. After a brief while there will be another box that appears where you pick the cloud settings. br /
br /
I pretty much vary these on each image. I sometimes use a manual seed value and others random. I sometimes use small or large x and y values. Same with the details, sometimes small and sometimes large. You just have to play with these and see the results.br /
br /
After you apply the results, if you are not happy, you can click on Edit - Undo.br /
br /
One other tip, if you can not get a high enough threshold value to mask out everything except the sky, you can manually edit the layer masks in the layers property box by simply painting over them with either black or white selected and using a paintbrush.br /
br /
At this point I usually save the file complete with layers in gimps native xcf format. I resize the photo and save it again with sm or flickr added to the image name. I then flatten the image and save it as a jpg file. I use digikam to tag the image and upload the file to flickr.br /
br /
The image pp above was done and completed in about 4 minutes. If you pixel peep you will notice and can tell it is pp'd and the sky was fixed because you will see details lost in the blown out limbs and leaves. I could have fixed these too, but I am really strapped for time with school and work. It is not so obvious in flickr sized photos, but I can assure you if this image was printed it would stick out like a broken limb....lol/pThu, 9 Oct 2008

I was really disappointed with this picture. It was taken about 730PM just as the sun was beginning to set. I took two pictures, one metered on the shadows and one metered on the highlights, but both were blown out on the chimney area. My only solution was an over the top HDR./pSun, 14 Sep 2008
